I just watched the stunning Zhang Yimou film “The Flowers of War”- the 1930’s were a fascinating time for fashion in cosmopolitan China as the presence of foreigners influenced hair, makeup, and clothing styles. (and my opinion only. ‘lacking soul’ here only if you mean despair and anguish. the state of chinese fashion right now reflects the mood of the nation, which is of hopes and dreams of grandeur. usage of the term ‘soul’ here must only refer to an american notion.
currently the general trend in chinese fashion is heavy fabrics and lots of ornate designs; this reflects the booming economy and consumer consumption for goods that associate with luxury. economy and politics have always entwined with fashion. so yes, if you say ‘lacking an american soul’ i’d agree. but if you say ‘lacking a chinese soul’ i’d disagree.)
