Shang Xia Beijing Store / Kengo Kuma and Associates

This lattice made of extruded aluminum traditional masonry evokes the old neighborhoods of Beijing. Made in H-shaped sections of two sizes lining the ceiling and makes the store´s distribution using light walls in the different rooms in this shop in a mall in the central business district in northeast Beijing. The deepest part of the store is lined with bricks but made with tea leaves that give a clear dark contrast to the whole space.

Beijing Design Week 2012 Dashila’r

Just came home from the opening parties of Beijing Design Week pop-ups in Dashila’r. Brings back lots of memories of our pop-up teahouse with Wuhao in Dashila’r last year!

The most inspirational installation I saw tonight was a light installation “milkywave” by AIDIA STUDIO inspired by the iconic Beijing street yogurt jar.   According to their explanation, the installation was a collection of 1664 bottles

“a found object quintessential part of the hutongs DNA…reconstituted into a new entity familiar enough to activate old memories and radically new to enable new sensations.”

It was brilliant, beautiful, and clever—everything you want from great design!

Stay tuned as we do more updates on Beijing Design Week 2012 as the week progresses.

CCPiglet says hi!

We were discussing the relative merits of buying an I Love Beijing! shirt. I Love ___! shirts are probably the most touristy awful thing you can ever buy ever…but honestly out of everyone you know how many of them lived in China for half a year? Even though Beijing has more people than New York does I feel that the I Love Beijing! shirt isn’t quite as dreadful as I Love New York!. I still wouldn’t be caught dead wearing one, though.
